School Background

Our Story

St. Anthony’s Secondary School Kayunga draws its history from the evolution of the catholic church in Masaka, in 1948 the Late Rev. Pere Anthony Wasswa founded a catholic Sub Parish , which gave birth to a boys Primary that later advanced into a secondary school in 1984.

As one of the first boys primary school in the area it produced many important citizens in Masaka diocese and greater Masaka region who have served the diocese, Buganda government, the central government and the community in various capacities, example include Priests like the late Rev. Fr.Gerald Mukwaya, Rev. Fr. Micheal Ssewakiryanga, Rev, Fr. Joseph Ssemwanga and Rev. Fr. Kayiira, then the Former Katikiro Mulwamyammuli Ssemwogere, Mr. Mukalazi John, Retired Asst. Commisioner of Prisons Mr. Mawanda Francis Xavier, the Late Dr Ddumda Ssenatamu and The Late Evelisto Kayondo among many.

At the point of transforming from primary to secondary, the school had only one permanent classroom blocks with seven classrooms, “Pere Wasswa house”. But at present other structures have been put in place by donors, Ministry of Education and Sports and local collections from parents.

During the war of 1986, the school lost various properties as it was being used as a comp for soldiers, for example most of the furniture was used as fire wood and buildings damaged.

The school began in a humble way as Kayunga secondary school with few students from the nearby villages. It was duly registered with the Ministry of Education and sports as a government aided Secondary school in the same year 1984. In 1987 it registered its pioneer UCE candidates and assisted many schools who did not have UNEB centres to register its candidates like Kiryasaaka SS, Mpunge Citizens, Mandela SS, Nyendo Mixed.

In 1999 the A ‘level section was established with only arts subjects and the pioneer candidates sat for their UACE Exams in 2001. In the year 2010 sciences subjects were also introduced and the first candidates registered in 2012.

Due to Catholic Church policy, of all its schools having interceding Patron saints, the school had to change its name from Kayunga Secondary School to

St. Anthony’s Secondary school Kayunga in commemoration of the Late Rev. Pere Anthony Wasswa. Therefore all candidades who sat between 1998 and 2007, their pass slips read Kayunga SS and starting from 2008 it is St. Anthony’s SS Kayunga.

St. Anthony’s SS Kayunga since its birth has registered various success among challenges and produced many students in various fields like Teachers, Priests, Engineers, Doctors, Nurses, politicians businessmen and women and in other fields

Like our Vision states, our core business is academic excellence but at the same time we lay great emphasis on morals and development of talents and skills. Currently the school is under the USE and UPOLET government program.
